What is a doula?

The term "Doula" originates from Ancient Greek, meaning "woman servant." Today, it refers to a trained professional who provides non-medical support to individuals during pregnancy, labor, and birth. A doula offers emotional and spiritual encouragement, physical comfort through hands on care, and evidence-based information to help women be supported and empowered throughout their journey of becoming a mother.

Doulas build strong, trusting relationships with their clients to deliver meaningful and individualized care. They use calming techniques to reduce discomfort and help labor progress safely, creating a peaceful environment for childbirth.

Research shows that continuous support during labor from a trained professional, who is not part of your personal circle or medical team, can significantly improve outcomes for both the birthing person and the baby.

Key benefits include:

  • 25% reduction in the likelihood of a Cesarean birth

  • 8% increase in spontaneous vaginal births

  • 10% decrease in the use of pain-relieving medications

  • 38% lower risk of low Apgar scores for the baby

  • Improved satisfaction with birth experience

  • Shorter labor durations by an average of 41 minutes

  • Better communication: Doulas can help navigate confusing situations and advocate for your birth plan with your health care team.
